Email Marketing | best practices

mailto:demo@example.com?Subject=HighRoad Solutions - interesting article

Spiders. Heights. Snakes. Email Marketing Automation. One of these is not like the other, can you guess which one?

Over the years it has become apparent to us at HighRoad that there are certain things that our clients are getting spooked by when dealing with the emails they're sending.

To get the entire list of 13 (BOO!) and the fixes to help you sleep better at night, check out the full HighRoad U video here

So, here we have a compiled a list of some of the top issues in email that give you the creeps (and how to fix them!):

#1:  I’m Sending to All Subscribers to Invite Them to Our Event and Got Horrible Deliverability?
- Adjust the time period of your campaigns: Sending emails in the dead of summer is going to reach far less members than if your sending your email in fall when all your members are back from vacation mode.
- Run the full list through an email validation tool first to weed out bad email addresses
- Send them in batched deployments versus one deployment
- Make sure your delivery configuration is up to par like DKIM/SenderID

#2:  I Think My List and All Content in My Email are Good to Go, but I'm having "Send Live Message" Button Anxiety!
- First and foremost: Relax, it's just an email
- If there is a mistake, you can use sent message metrics to segment out engaged subscribers and resend corrections
- You can verify your list prior to sending by comparing your AMS data to the segment data

#3:  I Know Our Members Put In Their Correct Email Address but They're Invalid Now!?
- Spot check the email address for obvious mistakes (You'd be surprised how many people forget the period in .com)
- Use systems invalid syntax report during import process
- Review the bounce logs routinely to look for ISP issues that may have invalidated the record

#4:  People Are on The Opt-Out List That Never Went to Our EPC (Email Preference Center)?
- Include an unsubscribe link in the email pre-header area too
- Make sure there is an easy way for them to see where to manage preferences or unsubscribe
- Always honor the unsubscribe when sending emails

#5:  Why Did My Email Say “Dear Olson” When the First Name Was Robert?
- Map the first name and last name correctly but spot check several records in HighRoad
- If importing multiple columns, save as .txt file verse .csv in case any cell values have a comma in them
- Make sure your email message body is using the correct tag %%first%%

#6:  My Responsive Template Isn’t Being Responsive!
- Proof the original HTML code to ensure the tags are in the correct order
- Always use a correct workflow process when adding your content to the template Word>NotePad>Control C> Control V before you delete placeholder content

#7:  I Set Up A User Account and Now They Can’t Log In?
- When a new user account is set up for you or your password changes, you will get an email notification with a temporary password
- DO NOT copy and paste password from that email notification
- Type it in manually or first paste into NotePad

#8:  My Email Sent the Wrong Link!!!
- You can change a link after the email has been sent by going to reports>sent message, select the email and hit the edit button
- Overwrite the new link over the old and hit save
- Anyone who hasn’t opened the message with receive the correct link
